Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a synthetic, colorless, odorless, non-flammable gas widely used in the electrical industry for its excellent insulating and arc-quenching properties. Its high stability and non-toxicity make it suitable for applications in high-voltage circuit breakers, gas-insulated switchgear, and other electrical equipment. However, SF6 is also a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential (GWP) approximately 23,500 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 100-year period, and it has an atmospheric lifetime of about 3,200 years, leading to long-term environmental concerns.
