UN Conference on Sustainable Development

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, commonly known as Rio+20, took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from June 20 to 22, 2012. The conference marked the 20th anniversary of the 1992 Earth Summit and aimed to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess progress made since the Earth Summit, and address new and emerging challenges. One of the key outcomes of Rio+20 was the decision to initiate a process to develop a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), building on the Millennium Development Goals and aligning with the post-2015 development agenda. The conference also emphasized the need to strengthen the institutional framework for sustainable development and promote a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.

Key outcomes of Rio+20 include:

  • The Future We Want: The adoption of an outcome document outlining practical measures to implement sustainable development.
  • Development of SDGs: The launch of the process to establish the Sustainable Development Goals, which became central to the global development agenda in 2015.
  • Green Economy Policies: The promotion of green economy policies to support sustainable development and poverty eradication.

Rio+20 played a significant role in shaping the global sustainability agenda and laid the groundwork for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
